What our Readers are saying

Welcome to the very first issue of The Black Angel Letter.

I want to start at the beginning—not with angels or celestial realms, but with why this story exists.

Black Angel was born from grief, yes—but also from love. From the names we say too softly. From the stories we don’t always tell. From the question: What happens to the ones we lose too soon?

Brian Christopher, aka Black Angel, is my real son. He was shot and killed, at the age of 17, in a senseless shooting, on a hot summer night, in Rock Island, Illinois, about 3 hours from our home in Chicago. He was my only child. It’s been a long road for me to get here, where I can share my son with the world. Through my debut novel, Black Angel, I share him—not as a hero, but as a young man who deserved more time. Writing about him is an act of remembrance. Giving him wings is an act of hope.

This book is my way of saying: You mattered. You still matter.

In the months ahead, I’ll share more about Brian, the angels who guide him, and the world that refuses to forget him.

Before you go, I’d love to ask you something:
What draws you to stories about hope? Is there someone in your life that has left too soon?

You can reply and tell me—I read every message.

With heart,
Norma Jean
